Who’s on the Table?

Using nervous system science and attachment theory to recognize trauma and mindfully manage transference and countertransference.

NCBTMB Approved CE Course - CE Broker Approved Provider #50-25475

In this advanced course we closely examine the dimensions of transference, countertransference and projection through the lens of nervous system functioning.

Testimonials from Participants

Students will be invited to reflect on the personal, professional and psychological challenges of administering to others in an intimate, vulnerable and relatively non-verbal setting. Participants will learn Chi for Two partner practices designed to hone their felt sense and bring clarity to their Scope of Service when working with trauma-related material.

Lecture content will include an in-depth look at autonomic nervous system functioning. We will examine the ideas about the vagus nerve that were originally outlined in Dr. Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory with a new focus on the rhythm of vagal firing. The rhythm of vagal nerve firing is affected by how two-person therapeutic interactions replicate the infant/parent interactions that pattern nervous system functioning.

Integrating the use of autonomic cues in client care improves massage therapists’ ability to recognize and stabilize instances of transference and countertransference as well as trauma response, which may emerge in a bodywork session, including a trauma response of their own.

Hands-on “Self Practice” will include authentic movement via Myofascial Release/unwinding, Counterstrain, and Muscle Energy techniques.
